The Peace and Security Council of the African Union undertook a Field Mission to Somalia from 23rd to 26th March 2017. The main objective of the mission was to make first hand assessment of the situation in Somalia; thank AMISOM Forces for a job well done in dislodging Al-Shaba insurgents; and to congratulate and encourage the newly elected President H.E. Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamad and his government to make more and faster progress on the political processes to enhance unity, stability and national development.
The field mission was undertaken by the 15 member states that constitute the PSC, led by South Africa as the chair of the month of March 2017. Amb. Ndumiso Ntshinga of South Africa and his team met President Mohamad Abudullahi Mohamad of Somalia; central and regional government officials; AMISOM Force Commander and his forces; and toured the various AMISOM Sectors of command.
Among others, the PSC team visited Sector 4 under Brig. Kayanja Muhanga in charge of UPDF continent which is responsible for the capital Mogadishu. Uganda Embassy was represented by Brig. Sam Kiwanuka, Defence Advisor.
